Skunk Cabbages

The lowly Symplocarpus foetidus is truly an amazing plant! In spring, it heats up enough to melt snow and push through it, forming a spade and spadix of marvelous shape, pattern and color, before going to leaf. Every year in March I search in swampy areas for the most curious shapes. Here are some of them.
